While back in Ireland on holiday I presented to the GEOS society at the National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG). The talk was entitled “Drill, baby, drill! | the advantages of using IODP drilling data in convergent margin research“. I really enjoyed meeting the students from Galway and answering their questions. Here are a few photos from that night.

Our paper on the Iz-Bonin forearc sediments “Depositional setting, provenance and tectonic-volcanic setting of Eocene-Recent deep-sea sediments of the oceanic Izu-Bonin forearc, NW Pacific (IODP Expedition 352)” was accepted for publication at International Geology Review. Congratulations to all involved!

Yesterday, I submitted an abstract for the AGU Fall Meeting, which takes place in New Orleans in December. The title of the abstract is An Integrated Age Model for the Cocos Plate using IODP CRISP Drilling Data. We’ll find out in October if it has been accepted.

Two studies arising from IODP Expedition 352 were submitted over the last few days. “Tephrostratigraphy and provenance from IODP Expedition 352, Izu-Bonin arc: tracing tephra sources and volumes from the Oligocene to the Recent” by Kutterolf, et al., was submitted to Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems and the “Role of Late Oligocene-Recent deep-sea hemipelagic and tuffaceous sediments overlying oceanic crust of the Izu-Bonin forearc (IODP Expedition 352) in the tectonic development of the NW Pacific region” by Robertson, et al., was submitted to International Geology Review. Fingers crossed for both papers! My contribution was to identify the radiolarians extracted from the cores and to help construct the age model.

More good news for February. Maria’s paper on radiolarians from IODP Expedition 344 has been accepted for publication in Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems. My contribution was to help build the age model for the study. Congratulations Maria!

Good news from the weekend, Lloyd’s Sulawesi paper was accepted for publication in the Journal of Asian Earth Sciences. The accepted manuscript is now available online (click the link below). Congrats Lloyd! For more information on Lloyd and his research, you can visit his website here.

Working on a number of projects this year including age models for IODP Expeditions 352 and 344. Looking forward to the Expedition 354 post-cruise meeting in Nepal so I can catch up with my shipmates and discuss how our research is going!

My colleagues and I are also working on a few research projects in ancient collision zones, such as Tibet and Eastern Australia. Fingers crossed we’ll submit this work for publication in the near future.

A busy 2017 ahead to say the least!

My paper on radiolarians extracted from cherts found along the Bangong-Nuijang Suture Zone in Tibet has just reached 50 citations! Here are some photos from the field area near Gertze in western central Tibet.

Naomi Barshi created a great poster about the December 2004 Indonesian earthquake, the primary reason why the JR is currently drilling offshore Sumatra. Check out this Expedition 362 blog post to learn more about why drilling in a convergent margin setting is so important.
